New 1099 Requirements
Beginning in 2012, all companies will have to issue 1099 tax forms not just to contract workers, but also to any individual or corporation from which they buy more than $600 in goods or services in a tax year.
In addition to sending a 1099 MISC to the company that provides your lawn care or cleaning services you will also be required to send a 1099 to the company that you purchased the new office computers from.
Now is the best time to start keeping track of this type of information. The first step in doing this is to have a form W-9 completed by every individual or corporation that you do business with before any work is started. The form W-9 is completed by the company that you are doing business with and returned to you for record and tax purposes. The individual or corporation is to provide their name, address and federal tax ID number. This information is used to complete the 1099 at the end of the year if payments to the company exceed $600.
